Maths and Science in Term 3! 

Term 3 is always a very busy term at Greenvale Secondary College. Our Year 10s have rearranged their Maths classes in line with what they are planning on completing next year. Our VCE students have started Unit 2 in earnest and our Junior 7-9s have all moved into exploring Algebra, Equations, and Graphs.  

The real highlight of term 3 has been Science Week. We had a full week of activities organized for students starting with the VR Experience on Monday. Students were given a VR headset and placed into a variety of workplace scenarios in the STEM fields. A big thanks to Mr Fileccia for help organizing that experience. 

On Tuesday, we had a contingent of Year 7 and Year 8 students attend an excursion at Melbourne Museum, where they examined the geology exhibits and the indigenous gardens. They also had an opportunity to explore the other exhibits and develop their other aspects of scientific knowledge. A huge thanks to Ms Allesandri, Ms Austin and Mx Eyre for supervising the excursion and the students for their excellent behaviour. 

Back at school, we had Mr McCall put on a lunchtime experiment where students could make lava lamps by mixing liquids which were not miscible.  

On Wednesday, Ms Grusling did a botany experience with students where they could take home their own seedlings, to plant at home to look after. Hopefully, we can see some Greenvale Greenery sprouting soon!  

On Thursday, Ms Wilmot set up a microscopy experience for students to see the world in incredible detail and also some other activities. With the end of Science Week on Friday, Mr Murphy celebrated air pressure and launched some bottles high into the air in front of the STEM building.  

A huge thanks to all the staff and students who got involved with Science Week 2026! 

In other classes, we had the year 8s complete a unit on Plate Tectonics and they created some amazing dioramas that they then performed a chemical reaction in to simulate an eruption. 

Our STEM students also made some amazing Mouse Trap cars that reached some impressive speeds that broke school records!
