Instrumental Music

Music at Greenvale Secondary College is part of the core curriculum for all students. Instrumental music (including voice as an instrument) is an optional program for which the school provides tuition via a trained music instructor and access to instruments at a subsidised cost to families.

Why Learn Instrumental Music

It is fun and allows you to be part of our exciting ensemble program! Learning music activates different parts of our cognitive processes and helps in learning a variety of other disciplines. It is also a great way to experience the benefits of persistence … and you come away with some cool skills.

You get to perform and represent the school as a leader of our music program. There will be many opportunities for engaging outside the school in community events, trips, etc. over the years.

WHAT IT COSTS

Instrumental music lessons cost $600 per year and are charged at $300 per semester. Other incidental costs for items such as music books, reeds, strings, etc. may be incurred and will be charged appropriately.

Most instruments can be hired from our school (depending on availability). Our instrumental staff will be able to recommend brands and stores to help you.

Please do not purchase any instruments from Amazon, Aldi, Costco or EBAY.

$200 instrument hire annual fee* (if required)
• This subsidises some of the costs to make it more accessible for you
• Instrument hire is offered to first year instrumental music students only. After the first year, families will be required to purchase their own instrument, except for selected instruments as discussed with the Music Coordinator.

What You Get

  • 40-minute lessons that rotate each week (group size is capped at 3 and is dependent on which instrument you are learning)

  • Tuition with a music instructor
  • Ensemble participation when appropriate (compulsory)
  • Performance opportunities

WHEN DO I GET LESSONS?

Lessons begin in Week 3 of Term 1. Enrolments are still accepted after this date; however, lessons will not be made up for any weeks missed prior to a student’s enrolment.

The number of lessons received will vary depending on the number of weeks each semester, public holidays, and school events that may occur. Instrumental teachers will do their best to reschedule lessons that are missed due to school excursions/incursions or their own absence. If students are absent from a lesson, it is not expected of a teacher to make this up.

The instrumental teacher will allocate a set day for lessons. Each week the lesson time will be different to avoid missing out on the same class. Students’ lesson time will appear on compass for themselves and the classroom teacher to see. It is the student’s responsibility to attend their lesson on time.
