PRINCIPALS REPORT 

As Term 3 draws to a close, I want to thank our students, staff and families for the way you have worked together across what has been a busy and important term at Greenvale Secondary College.

Since commencing at the College, our focus has been clear: to support a calm, orderly and inclusive learning environment where every student is known, feels they belong and is supported to achieve their best.

Across the term, we have strengthened our focus on classroom routines, attendance, behaviour expectations and protecting instructional time. I have been encouraged by the progress we are seeing, particularly in more students being in class, ready to learn and engaging positively with their teachers and peers.

Importantly, this work has been about creating greater clarity and consistency around the things that matter most high expectations, respectful relationships and a school environment where students and staff can be successful.

I have also greatly valued the opportunity to listen to our community. Through conversations with students, staff and families, including our recent feedback forums, we are continuing to build a clearer picture of what our community values about Greenvale and where we can continue to improve.

Our College values of Excellence, Leadership, Respect and Teamwork remain central to this work. These values are not simply words; they should be visible in the way we learn, work together and contribute to our community each day.

Looking ahead, I am excited about the opportunities before us. My vision for Greenvale is to continue building a high-performing, inclusive school where every student is challenged and supported to achieve excellence, and where strong partnerships with families and our wider community create even more opportunities for young people to succeed.

Thank you to our staff for their commitment and professionalism throughout the term, to our families for their continued support and partnership, and most importantly to our students for the energy, character and contribution they bring to our College every day.

Assistant Principal’s Term 3 Update 

As have moved through Term 3, it has been encouraging to see our students embracing opportunities to learn, connect and challenge themselves across a time of change at Greenvale Secondary College. This term has been filled with engaging learning experiences and events, with many chances for students to demonstrate our school value of Excellence. 

Celebrating Learning  

Book Week and Book Dress Up Day was a wonderful celebration of reading, imagination and creativity. It was fantastic to see so many students and staff getting involved in activities, and bringing their favourite books and characters to life, including senior students and teachers setting the example of a love of reading for younger students. 

Students were also immersed in Science Week activities, with a range of activities designed to provoke investigation and problem-solving. This included incursions such as Virtual Reality and our own Mr Murphy’s rocket demonstration. Students in Year 7 and 8 had the opportunity to visit the Melbourne Museum providing, enriching their learning of the Science curriculum through real-life exploration and allowing students to make meaningful connections between what they learn at school and the wider world. 

Our students have also continued show excellence by extending themselves through extra-curricular activities such as Interschool Sport and the Performing Arts showcase of music and drama. Engaging in such activities allow students to show commitment and consistency in their preparation, and give other schools, students and parents an opportunity to share in their teamwork and resilience.  

We congratulate all students who have participated in these all of these events and thank the staff who have supported them throughout the term. 

Preparing for Learning Success 

For our senior students, Term 3 has been an important period of preparation and consolidation as they near the end of Unit 2 and 4 studies. Along with students in Years 9 to 11, those enhancing into Year 12 subjects are now turning their attention towards exam preparation, with two classes of students set to undergo GSC’s first ever VCE external exams in early November. 

For all students undertaking exams in Term 4, these types of assessment provide an important opportunity for students to experience formal examination conditions, practise their revision and study strategies, and receive valuable feedback about areas for further improvement. We encourage our students to establish effective study routines, make use of the support available at school and approach their preparation with confidence and purpose. 

Excellence – Being Present and Engaged in Learning 

Throughout Term 3, we have placed a strong emphasis on our school value of Excellence. For us, Excellence is not simply about achieving the highest result. It is about students consistently striving to be their best, making positive choices and taking responsibility for their learning. 

A key focus for Term 3 was being in class and learning during the school day. Every lesson matters. Students will not fully benefit from the learning opportunities provided by their teachers if they are regularly absent from class, arriving late, or leaving lessons unnecessarily. 

As we head into Term 4 we will continue to work to teach students the importance of punctuality and active participation in every lesson. Being present, prepared and ready to learn is one of the simplest and most powerful ways students can demonstrate Excellence. We encourage families to discuss with their students how they can every day choose to take on the educational opportunities that being a school student presents. Excellence begins with being present, being engaged and making the most of every learning opportunity.

Year 7 – Term 3 Newsletter

Term 3 has been a term full of highlights in Year 7 at Greenvale Secondary College! Our Year 7 students have continued to grow as learners, and young people within our community, with plenty of achievements and memorable moments to celebrate. 

One of the highlights was Book Week, where it was fantastic to see so many Year 7 students dressing up, getting involved and embracing the spirit of the week. The creativity and enthusiasm on display brought plenty of colour and energy to the school. 

Our students also came together for R U OK? Day, recognising the importance of mental health, looking out for one another and understanding the value of a simple check-in. It was a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of connection, empathy and supporting those around us. 

The Performing Arts Gala was another wonderful occasion. A huge congratulations and thank you goes to all of our Year 7 students who participated. It takes courage to perform in front of an audience, and we were incredibly proud to see our students showcasing their talents and representing the Year 7 cohort. 

During Science Week, a select group of Year 7 students had the opportunity to participate in an excursion that extended their learning beyond the classroom. Experiences like these provide students with opportunities to explore their interests, ask questions and see how their classroom learning connects with the wider world. 

A particularly exciting sporting achievement came from our Year 7 Boys Netball Team, who qualified for the State Championships. This is a significant milestone, as they are the first Greenvale Secondary College team to qualify for a State Championship. Congratulations to the players involved, we wish the boys all the best at the next level! 

Perhaps most pleasing has been the continued growth we have seen across the entire Year 7 cohort. Throughout Term 3, there has been a decrease in minor behaviours, reflecting the positive choices our students are making each day. More and more, our Year 7s are demonstrating what it means to live the Greenvale Secondary College values of Teamwork, Excellence, Respect and Leadership. 

As we head towards the final term of their first year of secondary school, we encourage our Year 7 students to continue building on this progress, supporting one another and making the most of every opportunity. 

Well done, Year 7we are proud of your progress and look forward to an exciting Term 4. 

Dear parents and guardians,

The Year 8 students have had a fantastic term, embracing opportunities to get involved, challenge themselves and demonstrate our school values. Students proudly represented the school in interschool sport, competing in AFL and soccer and showing fantastic teamwork, respect and sportsmanship. It has been wonderful to see students encouraging one another, working together and giving their best effort, regardless of the result. These experiences are a great reminder that leadership and teamwork are not just about being the best, but about supporting others and representing our school with pride. 

Another highlight was an important and engaging presentation from the Pat Cronin Foundation. Students had the opportunity to learn about the importance of making positive choices, looking out for others and understanding the impact that our decisions can have. The presentation encouraged students to reflect on how they can demonstrate respect and leadership in their everyday lives, both at school and within the wider community. 

As we look towards 2027, Year 8 students have also been busy thinking about their future and making their elective choices for Year 9. This is an exciting opportunity for students to explore new interests, develop their skills and take greater ownership of their learning. Across the term, our Year 8s have continued to demonstrate our school values of Respect, Leadership, Teamwork and Excellence, and I look forward to seeing them continue to grow and thrive as they prepare for the next stage of their secondary schooling.

Term 3 Newsletter – Year 9 Update

It has been a busy and rewarding term for the Year 9 students, who have embraced a range of opportunities to learn, grow and demonstrate our school values. 

Students have been actively involved in the subject selection process, taking time to consider their interests, strengths and future pathways. They have also completed their MOISBY testing, providing valuable opportunities for students to reflect on their learning and personal development. 

The Year 9 Connect Personal Best projects have encouraged students to challenge themselves, explore their interests and work towards achieving their personal best. It has been fantastic to see so many students stepping up, taking on new challenges and demonstrating our school values through their commitment, resilience and positive contribution to the wider school community. 

The Year 9 cohort also enthusiastically embraced our Book Week celebrations, with many students getting into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as their favourite characters. Their creativity and enthusiasm helped make the celebrations a wonderful success. 

Looking ahead to Term 4, students will have the exciting opportunity to take part in City Experience. This program will allow students to explore and learn more about our great city while developing their confidence and independence as they navigate their way through a range of activities and experiences. 

It has been wonderful to see the Year 9 students continuing to grow in confidence, take responsibility and make the most of the opportunities available to them. There is much to look forward to in Term 4.

Term 3 Newsletter – Year 10 

Dear Students, Families and Teachers of Year10 

Thank you for the continued support of our students as we guide them through the Yr10 program and help them prepare for the VCE years ahead.  

Term 3 has seen a continued rise in responsibilities for Year10s and ongoing improvement in students’ study habits. Students are becoming more and more ready for their senior years and many already shining in their early VCE studies. Soon the school will post subject allocations for VCE 2027.  

A highlight of Term 3 has been the Stand Up Leaders’ busy work all term planning and preparing the lessons to deliver to Year7 classes and should be commended for their work.  

Students enjoyed other events like the Book Week Dress Up day and activities in RUOK week.

Term 3 Newsletter – Year 11

Term 3 has been another busy and rewarding term for our Year 11 students as they continue to progress through their senior secondary studies and move closer to their final year of schooling. 

Throughout the term, students have progressed well through Unit 2, continuing to develop their knowledge, skills and study habits across their chosen subjects. It has been pleasing to see students becoming increasingly confident in managing the expectations of senior school and taking greater responsibility for their learning. 

An important milestone this term has been students making their Year 12 study decisions for 2027. These decisions mark an exciting point in their secondary school journey as they begin to look ahead to their final year at Greenvale Secondary College. Students have been encouraged to carefully consider their interests, strengths and future pathways when selecting their Year 12 program. As we move into the final phase of secondary school, there is a growing sense of excitement about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. 

Our VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM) students have also continued to build valuable skills and experiences beyond the classroom through their external VET programs and work placements. These opportunities allow students to develop practical workplace skills, explore possible career pathways and make important connections between their school program and the world of work. 

There was also plenty of enthusiasm during Book Week, with Year 11 students embracing the opportunity to dress up as their favourite characters from books and novels. It was fantastic to see students getting involved in the celebrations, showing their creativity and contributing to the positive atmosphere across the school. 

Beyond their academic and vocational achievements, one of the most pleasing aspects of Term 3 has been seeing our Year 11 students continue to grow as young adults. Throughout the year, they have developed greater independence, maturity and responsibility as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of senior school. They are increasingly becoming positive role models within the school community and preparing themselves for the greater independence that Year 12 and life beyond secondary school will bring. 

As Term 3 draws to a close, we congratulate our Year 11 students on their continued progress and thank families for their ongoing support. We look forward to a positive conclusion to Unit 2 and supporting students as they prepare to take the exciting next step into Year 12 and their final year of secondary school.

English and Humanities Department – Term 3 Update 

Term Three has been an engaging and productive period for the English and Humanities Department at Greenvale Secondary College, with students across Years 7–12 developing their knowledge, skills and confidence through a diverse range of learning experiences. 

English 

Across Years 7–9, students have been developing their persuasive writing and speaking skills through a range of contemporary topics. Year 7 students explored the world of advertising, examining how language, images and persuasive techniques are used to influence audiences. Year 8 students investigated sustainability, considering environmental issues and developing arguments designed to encourage positive action. Year 9 students explored fake news and TED Talks, developing their ability to identify misinformation, evaluate persuasive techniques and construct and deliver engaging presentations. 

Year 10 students completed an in-depth text analysis of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go. Students explored the novel’s complex ideas, including identity, belonging, freedom, control, memory and what it means to be human. Through analytical writing, students developed their ability to construct arguments supported by textual evidence and analyse Ishiguro’s use of characterisation, narrative perspective and language. 

In Term Four, all students from Years 7–10 will turn their attention to creative writing, exploring a variety of hybrid text forms. Students will experiment with combining different modes, genres and forms to create engaging and purposeful texts while developing their understanding of audience, voice, structure and authorial choices. 

Our VCE English students have completed Unit 2 Area of Study 1, undertaking a detailed text analysis of Maxine Beneba Clarke’s memoir The Hate Race. Students examined the text’s exploration of racism, childhood, identity, beauty standards, injustice and the power of language. They have now commenced Area of Study 2, focusing on persuasive text analysis and speech writing and delivery, with the environment providing the central area of exploration. 

Our VCE Literature students have completed the first half of Unit 2 and are now moving into Area of Study 2: Texts in Their Contexts, where they will consider the relationship between literary texts and the social, cultural, historical and intellectual contexts in which they are produced and read. 

Humanities 

Term Four will provide students with a broad range of opportunities to develop their understanding of society, place, citizenship and the world around them. Years 7 and 8 will focus on Civics and Citizenship, exploring Australia’s system of government, democratic values and principles, the role of citizens in a democracy, Australia’s constitution and key institutions, rights and responsibilities, and ways individuals and groups can participate in civic life. 

Year 9 Geography students will investigate tourism and interconnections, examining how tourism connects people and places and exploring its economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts. Students will consider the management of tourism and the challenges associated with developing sustainable tourism practices. 

In Year 10 History, students will investigate the impact of World War II, examining the causes, experiences and consequences of the conflict and its significance for Australia and the wider world. Year 10 students in Legal Studies and Accounting will transition into Economics and Accounting, building their financial literacy, analytical skills and understanding of economic decision-making. Students studying Politics will investigate political systems and revolutions before examining Australia’s relationships with its regional neighbours. 

Our VCE Humanities students will also continue to engage with challenging and contemporary areas of study. Modern History students will investigate the causes and consequences of social and cultural change in the modern world, while Business Management, Sociology, Geography, Accounting and Legal Studies students will develop their knowledge through real-world scenarios, case studies, research and analytical tasks. 

Celebrating Books and Reading 

A particular highlight of Term Three was our whole-school Book Week celebrations. The English team organised a range of trivia competitions and book-themed activities during lunchtime, creating opportunities for students and staff to celebrate their love of reading. The celebrations culminated in a wonderful Book Character Dress-Up Day, with both teachers and students embracing the opportunity to bring favourite literary characters to life. 

We thank our students, staff and families for their continued enthusiasm and support throughout Term Three and look forward to another exciting term of learning in English and Humanities. 

Maths and Science in Term 3! 

Term 3 is always a very busy term at Greenvale Secondary College. Our Year 10s have rearranged their Maths classes in line with what they are planning on completing next year. Our VCE students have started Unit 2 in earnest and our Junior 7-9s have all moved into exploring Algebra, Equations, and Graphs.  

The real highlight of term 3 has been Science Week. We had a full week of activities organized for students starting with the VR Experience on Monday. Students were given a VR headset and placed into a variety of workplace scenarios in the STEM fields. A big thanks to Mr Fileccia for help organizing that experience. 

On Tuesday, we had a contingent of Year 7 and Year 8 students attend an excursion at Melbourne Museum, where they examined the geology exhibits and the indigenous gardens. They also had an opportunity to explore the other exhibits and develop their other aspects of scientific knowledge. A huge thanks to Ms Allesandri, Ms Austin and Mx Eyre for supervising the excursion and the students for their excellent behaviour. 

Back at school, we had Mr McCall put on a lunchtime experiment where students could make lava lamps by mixing liquids which were not miscible.  

On Wednesday, Ms Grusling did a botany experience with students where they could take home their own seedlings, to plant at home to look after. Hopefully, we can see some Greenvale Greenery sprouting soon!  

On Thursday, Ms Wilmot set up a microscopy experience for students to see the world in incredible detail and also some other activities. With the end of Science Week on Friday, Mr Murphy celebrated air pressure and launched some bottles high into the air in front of the STEM building.  

A huge thanks to all the staff and students who got involved with Science Week 2026! 

In other classes, we had the year 8s complete a unit on Plate Tectonics and they created some amazing dioramas that they then performed a chemical reaction in to simulate an eruption. 

Our STEM students also made some amazing Mouse Trap cars that reached some impressive speeds that broke school records!

Arts & Technology – Term 3 Newsletter

Term 3 has been a productive and engaging period of learning across the Arts and Technology learning areas at Greenvale Secondary College. As students continue to progress through the year, there has been a strong focus on developing subject-specific knowledge, refining practical skills and building greater independence, creativity and confidence in their learning.

In Drama and Performing Arts, students have continued to develop their confidence, creativity and performance skills throughout Term 3. A highlight of the term was our Performing Arts Gala, held on 20 August, which brought together students, families and staff to celebrate the talent and dedication of our performing arts community. The evening featured performances from our Instrumental Music students, alongside an exciting preview of our upcoming production, The Lies We Were Told. Audiences were captivated by the students’ talent, energy and comedic performances, with plenty of laughter and moments of suspense throughout the evening. The Gala provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the skills students have developed throughout the year and has left families, staff and students eagerly anticipating the full production when it takes to the stage in Term 4.

In Media, students have continued to develop their understanding of how media communicates meaning and influences audiences. Students have also continued to develop their practical skills in photography and digital media, with an increasing focus on planning, experimentation and making intentional creative choices.

In Visual Communication Design, students have continued to strengthen their design thinking and visual language skills. Students have developed their ability to generate and refine ideas, communicate concepts visually and make informed decisions about the use of design elements, principles and methods. Across the year levels, there has been a particular emphasis on developing students’ understanding of how designers respond to a brief, investigate problems and communicate solutions for a specific purpose and audience.

In Food Technology, students have continued to build their knowledge of food, nutrition and food preparation while developing greater confidence in practical environments. Students have strengthened their understanding of food safety, hygiene, cooking methods and the scientific principles that influence food preparation and outcomes. Through practical experiences, students have been able to apply theoretical knowledge, evaluate results and make connections between food choices, nutritional considerations and broader food systems.

In Art, students have continued to develop their ability to communicate ideas and meaning through visual language. Students have expanded their understanding of artistic techniques, materials, styles and processes while learning to make increasingly deliberate choices about how they create and present their work. A strong focus has been placed on experimentation and refinement, encouraging students to explore possibilities, respond to their own ideas and evaluate their progress.

In Materials Technology and Product Design, students have continued to develop their practical capabilities alongside their understanding of design and production processes. Students have strengthened their knowledge of materials, tools, equipment and manufacturing techniques, while developing greater accuracy, problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Across the year levels, students are increasingly being encouraged to plan carefully, work safely and independently, evaluate their progress and respond to challenges throughout the design and production process.

Term 3 marks an important stage for our senior school students’. As students commence Unit 2, they are building on the knowledge and skills developed during Unit 1 and beginning to work with greater independence and complexity. Students are extending their understanding of the foundational skills of each of the arts and technology subjects, developing greater confidence in communicating their decisions and establishing skills for the increased expectations of Year 12 VCE. Students are being encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, manage their time effectively and approach design problems with increasing sophistication.

As we look ahead to Term 4, there is plenty to be excited about across the Arts and Technology learning areas. Students will continue to challenge themselves, extend their capabilities and bring their creativity and ideas to life through a range of learning experiences. With VCE students building momentum towards their year 12 studies and our younger students continuing to develop their skills and confidence, Term 4 promises to be a celebration of learning, creativity and achievement. We look forward to seeing out students continue to grow, take risks, embrace new challenges and showcase the incredible talent and dedication that makes our Arts and Technology community so special.

Health & Physical Education Department Update – Term 3, 2026 

Term 3 has been another exciting and successful term for our Health and Physical Education Department, with students representing the school across a wide range of sports and competitions. We are incredibly proud of the effort, resilience and sportsmanship displayed by all students who have participated throughout the term. 

Our Year 8 AFL Boys Team competed strongly and were unlucky not to progress beyond the Northern Metropolitan Region (NMR) stage. The boys represented the school with pride and put up a fantastic fight against quality opposition. 

Our Intermediate Boys and Girls Basketball Teams faced strong competition at the Division round. While both teams were unfortunately unable to progress, they competed with determination and should be commended for their efforts throughout the day. 

At the Year 8 NMR Netball Competition, our boys demonstrated tremendous resilience. After narrowly losing their opening game, the team quickly responded, winning their second and third matches convincingly. Despite just missing out on a finals berth, the boys should be extremely proud of reaching the NMR stage and the way they represented the school. 

The highlight of the term has undoubtedly been our Year 7 Boys Netball Team, who have achieved a historic milestone by progressing through to the State Championships later this month. The boys remained unbeaten throughout the day and displayed incredible determination in a memorable second game. Trailing 9-12 at three-quarter time, they produced an outstanding final quarter to secure a thrilling 16-14 victory, highlighted by a clutch goal from Leo W and a dominant shooting performance from Adam S at Goal Shooter. 

The boys then backed up with an outstanding defensive display in the final, defeating strong opposition 9-7. Adam A and Ajay R were instrumental in defence at Goal Keeper and Goal Defence, while Liam T worked tirelessly through the centre court, supported brilliantly by our Wing Attack and Wing Defence players. This achievement is particularly special as it marks the first time in the school’s history that a team has progressed through to State level competition. We wish the boys the very best as they compete at State Finals on 14 September. 

Track and Field has also been a major success this term. We had over 20 students represent the school at Division Athletics, with an impressive 13 students progressing through to NMR Athletics.

• Foga’a A for outstanding performances in Discus and Javelin. 

• Chantelle B for winning four track events. 

• Raavi B for placing first in Javelin. 

• Aria E for winning the 12-13 Girls Long Jump. 

• Emna K for placing first in two events. 

• Laibah K for an incredible five first-place finishes. 

• Ajay R for dominating the 200m sprint and contributing to the successful 4x100m relay team. 

• Bilal S and Adam S for their excellent performances in the 12-13 Boys Shot Put and Javelin. 

• Jacob T for a strong first-place finish in the 800m. 

• Toby T for progressing through in both Triple Jump and the 1500m. 

• Ilhan Y for winning both High Jump and Javelin. 

We look forward to supporting these students at the upcoming NMR Track and Field Championships on 9 September. 

Basketball has also seen strong performances across our junior teams. At the Division Basketball competition, our Year 7 Boys Team was dominant throughout the day, eventually defeating Gladstone Park by more than 20 points in the final to progress through to NMR. Our Year 7 Girls Team battled hard against tough opposition, recording one win and showing excellent determination throughout the day. 

Our final basketball event of the term saw the Year 8 Boys Team continue their impressive form, going unbeaten throughout the competition and earning progression to NMR. The Year 8 Girls Team demonstrated great resilience, securing one victory and narrowly missing out in several closely contested matches against quality opposition. 

As we approach the end of Term 3, we would like to thank all students, staff and families for their ongoing support of school sport. We are excited for the opportunities that still lie ahead, particularly the NMR Track and Field Championships and the Year 7 Boys State Netball Championships. 

The dedication, teamwork and commitment shown by our students continue to make our school community proud. We look forward to celebrating more success stories in the future. 

SRC / House Term 3 Update   

Term 3 has been a busy and productive term for the Greenvale Secondary College Student Representative Council (SRC), with students taking action to strengthen student voice, wellbeing and connection across the College. 

GSC Sport Shop Launch 

Term 3 began with a whole-school assembly, where Year 8 Captain Sally-Rose welcomed Acting Principal Ms Haley Kerr to Greenvale Secondary College. During the assembly, Year 7 leaders Cattelya Kongrung provided an SRC update and officially launched the GSC Sport Shop, which operates every Tuesday during Break 2. 

The Sport Shop gives students the opportunity to borrow sporting equipment and get active during lunchtime. A special thank you goes to Poorneet House Leader Hannah Soubjaki, who has been leading the initiative each Tuesday. 

The SRC has already noticed an increase in physical activity during recess and lunchtime, with many students getting involved and some even borrowing equipment on additional days. It has been fantastic to see students making the most of the opportunity to be active, connect with others and enjoy their break times. 

Celebrating World Principals’ Day 

The SRC celebrated World Principals’ Day during the Year 7 Assembly, recognising the dedication and leadership of the College’s Principal Team. 

A special shout out goes to Visual Arts Representative Ayda Huseyin, who created individual artworks as a meaningful way of thanking Ms Kerr, Ms Gall, Ms Gibbs, Ms Farnan and Ms Vella. Ayda presented the artworks on behalf of the students, acknowledging the ongoing dedication of the Principal Team in supporting students, staff and the wider College community. 

Thank you also to SRC leaders Jordan Stenhouse, Khadijah Mian, Noor-e Fatima, Aysia-Grace Savea and Aaliyah Merhi, who contributed by creating personalised cards. 

During the assembly, SRC representatives Sia Parmar and Cattelya Kongrung also spoke about the importance of kindness and what it means to demonstrate and uphold the College’s values in everyday interactions. 

Student Voice: Lunchtime Clubs and Activities 

Throughout Term 3, Year 8 and Year 9 student representatives visited Connect classes to gather student feedback about potential lunchtime clubs and activities for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. 

Using digital surveys developed by the SRC, students were given an opportunity to share their ideas and have their voices heard. The next step will be to survey the remaining year levels before the SRC reviews the feedback and identifies opportunities to introduce new lunchtime clubs and activities in Term 4 and beyond. 

The SRC would also like to acknowledge Mr Lawless for his support with the planning and implementation of the student survey. 

Looking Ahead: 2027 SRC 

The SRC is excited to launch the 2027 SRC application process at the beginning of Term 4, including applications for the College’s first ever Year 12 Captain position. 

Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the importance of student voice, the qualities of effective student representatives and the range of leadership opportunities available at Greenvale Secondary College. 

The current SRC looks forward to inspiring the next generation of student leaders to step forward, make their mark and continue building a strong, inclusive and supportive College community.

Building Culture, Connections & Active Support 

At Greenvale Secondary College, we remain committed to empowering our students, fostering respectful relationships, and building a supportive, inclusive environment where every young person feels valued. This term has been packed with engaging student workshops, empowering leadership initiatives, ongoing support programs, and upcoming events that bring our community together. 

Empowering Student Leaders: The Stand Up Project 

This term, our Year 10 student leaders participated in specialized training through The Stand Up Project, an initiative dedicated to building strong peer culture and active bystander behavior. 

Following their training, these inspiring leaders will deliver interactive presentations to our Year 7 students on the 14th September. By sharing practical strategies on how to safely stand up against bullying, promote inclusion, and foster respect, our Year 10 leaders are setting a powerful example. This peer-to-peer mentoring approach ensures our youngest students feel supported, connected, and confident as they navigate their secondary school journey. 

Educating for Safety: Pat Cronin Foundation Presentation 

Our Year 8 students recently attended an impactful presentation delivered by the Pat Cronin Foundation. 

The foundation was created in memory of Pat Cronin, whose life was tragically taken by an senseless act of social violence. Through an age-appropriate and deeply engaging session, our Year 8 cohort learned about: 

• The importance of wise decision-making and emotional regulation. 

• Recognizing conflict triggers before they escalate. 

• The lifelong impacts of violence and the power of ending the “coward’s punch.” 

We extend our sincere thanks to the Pat Cronin Foundation for delivering such a vital message of respect, self-control, and care for one another. 

Tailored Wellbeing & Peer Initiatives 

Paw Pals Group 

In term 3,  Mackillop Family Services Paw Pals is continuing to partner with GSC. This animal-assisted wellbeing initiative continues to offer students a calming, nurturing space to boost emotional regulation, improve social confidence, and develop empathy. The positive impact on participating students has been wonderful to witness. 

Tapped In Melbourne – Boys Program 

In Term 3, GSC introduced Tapped In- Melbourne.   Designed to promote positive masculinity, emotional intelligence, resilience, and healthy communication, the program provides a dedicated space for boys to discuss real-world challenges, build trust, and develop strong peer connections. 

Embracing Diversity: Acknowledging Wear It Purple Day 

Greenvale Secondary College would like to formally acknowledge Wear It Purple Day. 

Wear It Purple Day was established to demonstrate to rainbow young people that they are seen, supported, and respected. By celebrating diversity and taking a firm stance against discrimination, our college reaffirms its dedication to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and proud school culture for every student, staff member, and family. 

Upcoming Community Event: Sports Day Fundraiser

Get ready to show your team spirit! On Thursday, 17th September, Greenvale Secondary College will holding a Sports Day Fundraiser. 

• Dress Code: Students are invited to come dressed in their favorite sports team’s colors or wearing their team guernsey/jersey. 

• Donation: A gold coin donation is requested to support the purchase of additional sport equipment for the school 

• Break Time Activities: During lunch and recess, we will host friendly student and staff Netball and Soccer matches. 

• Sausage Sizzle: A sausage sizzle will be available for students to purchase lunch during the break.

A reminder to all families that the Greenvale Secondary College Breakfast Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday morning before school. 

Breakfast Club provides a free, wholesome breakfast—including cheese toasties and fruit. Whether students need a quick bite to kickstart their brainpower for the day or simply want a friendly chat with peers and staff, everyone is welcome! 

State Schools’ Relief 

At Greenvale Secondary College, we understand that uniform and school equipment can place a financial strain on families. Through our partnership with State Schools’ Relief, we are able to assist eligible families with essential school items, including school uniforms, protective school shoes, stationery packs, and trade-specific work gear for practical subjects. We are committed to ensuring that every student has access to the full uniform and proper equipment required to participate comfortably, safely, and proudly in all aspects of school life. 

Individual Wellbeing & Mental Health Support 

Our dedicated Student Wellbeing Team provides compassionate, student-centered care tailored to individual needs. We offer confidential one-on-one support, brief interventions, and structured case management to help students navigate personal, emotional, or social challenges. Where more specialized care is required, our team facilitates direct referrals to external mental health specialists and community health services, working collaboratively with families to ensure young people receive seamless, ongoing support. 

Inclusive Education & Learning Support 

We strive to create an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive regardless of their learning profile. Our team coordinates specialized referrals for speech pathology assessments and cognitive/educational assessments to better understand students’ individual learning needs. Based on these insights, we deliver tailored additional learning support, classroom modifications, and targeted intervention strategies designed to remove barriers to learning and foster academic confidence. 

Careers Pathways & Workplace Readiness 

To prepare students for life beyond secondary school, our Careers Team provides comprehensive pathway guidance and practical employment preparation. Every student is supported in developing an individualized Career Action Plan aligned with their strengths and goals. We offer hands-on assistance with resume writing, interview preparation, and navigating application processes, alongside dedicated support to help students secure meaningful Work Experience placements and Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) opportunities across local industries. 

Accessing Support & Referrals 

Accessing any of these support services is simple, flexible, and confidential. Referrals can be made directly by students, parents and carers, school staff, or external community services.

Morrisby Profiling and Interview    

In August, Year 9s participated in and undertook online surveys that will profile them with potential career paths.  For all completed profiles, students (and parent/s invited) will be scheduled for a 30 min interview in Term 4 between 6-7 October with a Morrisby Careers Practitioner to unpack and discuss results of their profile survey.    

The aim of Morrisby career profiling is to assist students explore their interests, aptitudes, and potential career paths, contributing to developing their Career Action Plan (CAP) and an approach to build goals and pathways, which will be the basis of preparing for the year 10 Work Experience Program, subject selections, work placements and future career decision making.

Music Newsletter September 2026

Our instrumental music students worked incredibly hard throughout the semester, preparing for what was a fantastic Performing Arts Gala on Thursday 20 August.

As part of their preparation, a lunchtime performance was held in Week 5, providing some students with a wonderful opportunity to perform in front of an audience for the first time.

The audience enjoyed a fantastic variety of performances, including drum solos performed along to backing tracks, as well as performances on alto saxophone and trombone. We also had the pleasure of hearing some of our more established performers showcasing their skills on bass guitar, piano and voice.

The concert attracted a wonderful audience of students and staff, who could be seen singing along, moving to the music and enthusiastically supporting their peers. The performances were clearly enjoyed by students and staff.

The following week, the Performing Arts Gala provided an opportunity for even more students to share their musical talents with the school community and their families. Instrumental Music Coordinator, Mrs. McPhail, encouraged all students participating in instrumental lessons to perform and welcomed students who do not currently take lessons at the school to get involved.

The Performing Arts Gala opened with a specially selected student ensemble, carefully put together by Mrs. McPhail, featuring at least one student from each year level. The group included percussion, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar and vocals, and performed the Michael Jackson hit They Don’t Really Care About Us.

The evening continued with an impressive range of solo and ensemble performances, showcasing the incredible diversity of talent within our school. The audience enjoyed solos on voice, piano, trombone, saxophone and guitar, as well as a beautiful vocal and guitar duet of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. We were also treated to a stunning performance of the Jurassic Park theme, performed as a French horn solo with guitar accompaniment.

There were plenty of show-stopping moments throughout the evening, including Ethan Vergaro’s wonderful performance of Frank Sinatra’s My Way and the school senior ensemble’s energetic performance of Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone.

The students and audience were also surprised by a special staff ensemble performance. The staff group featured Mrs. McPhail on tenor saxophone, Mr. Clark on bass guitar, Mr. Bairstow on drums and Ms. Brenton on piano. Their performance was a fun mash-up featuring snippets of songs from a huge range of artists, including The Beatles, Ed Sheeran, Timbaland, Taylor Swift, Adele, ABBA, Queen, Daryl Braithwaite and John Denver. They even managed to include Let It Go from Frozen and Barbie Girl by Aqua!

The purpose of the mash-up was to demonstrate to students that with just four chords, musicians can learn and perform an incredible number of songs. It was a fun way of showing students that music can be accessible, rewarding and something they can enjoy throughout their lives.

The Performing Arts Gala also featured a preview of our school’s first production, The Lies We Were Told, which will be performed in Term 4. It was wonderful to see the hard work Mrs. Manly and the production students put in at rehearsals for this to come together on stage. Their scene provided plenty of laughs for the audience.

The evening concluded with the school ensemble bringing the night to a lively finish with Tequila and I’m a Believer.

The Performing Arts Gala was a wonderful celebration of the musical and performing arts talent within our school community, and we look forward to seeing these students continue to grow, perform and share their talents in the future.

TERM 3 LIBRARY NEWS

Term 3 has been another busy and rewarding term in the library, with a strong focus on encouraging students to engage with reading, books and creative activities. A highlight of the term was Book Week, which was organised and run by the English/Humanities team and brought plenty of energy and excitement into the library. 

The library hosted a week of lunchtime activities, including Mad Libs, Make Your Own Graphic Novel, bookmark creation and a trivia competition, finishing with our Best Costume Competition. It was fantastic to see so many students getting involved and embracing the spirit of Book Week.

2026 Book of the Year Awards – Winners!

The winners of the 2026 CBCA Book of the Year Awards were announced in August. This year’s winning titles categories include

New to ePlatform: 

Our eBook and Audiobook collection has continued to be very popular, with students making great use of the digital library. This term has brought a range of new titles, with the latest additions in August and September including: 

eBooks vs Audiobooks: What’s the Difference? 

As students head into a well-earned break, reading beyond the classroom can be enjoyed. Stories can be explored, learning can continue, and the joy of reading can be discovered. It’s the perfect time to settle in with a good read through our Digital Library (ePlatform). The Digital Library gives students free access to a great range of eBooks and Audiobooks. Many ask, what’s the difference? 

In reality, they support different reading needs. eBooks give students flexible access to written text, with tools that support reading, searching, highlighting and accessibility. On the other hand, Audiobooks give students another way to access books through listening, helping them engage with stories, hear fluent reading and stay connected to age-appropriate texts. 

eBooks and Audiobooks both give students digital access to books, but the reading experience is different. eBooks are read visually on a screen, while Audiobooks are listened to through recorded narration.
