PRINCIPALS REPORT

Read Time: ( words)

As another busy term draws to a close, it is an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved in Term 3 in only our third year of operation. Whilst we have achieved so much, we also know there is a lot still to do. Aside from stage 2 construction works finishing up – we will be working in Term 4 to review our progress this year and to make plans for 2025. In 2025 we will focus on implementing the Berry Street Education Model alongside our Positive Learning Framework.

We continue to see a strong interest for enrolments and our offers for Year 7 2025 have been confirmed via the primary schools and we have now welcomed our new families to Greenvale Secondary College.  In 2025, our enrolment growth remains steady but at the same time we have not been able to place over 100 families.

RUOK DAY

R U OK? Day 2024 is Thursday 13 September and is our national day of action when we remind everyone that every day is the day to  ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.

This year we decided to acknowledge R U OK Day early with staff so that we could then focus our efforts on this important day with students. Across the week it was pleasing to see so many members of our learning community support each other and ask R U Ok?

By taking the time for an R U OK? conversation and genuinely listening with an open mind, we can all help the people in our world feel supported and connected. Let the people in your world know you’re here, to really hear, because a conversation could change a life.

STAGE 2 BUILDING WORKS UPDATE

It is nearly finished!

All members of our community may have seen the progress of our Stage 2 buildings, and it is exciting to think that in 2025 we will have students learning out of these spaces.

Across Term 4, students will have the opportunity to tour our new spaces in preparation for their learning in 2025.

Stage 2 facilities will include:

  • Learning Neighbourhood Building B
  • Visual Arts Building
  • Performing Arts, PE and Food Technology Building
  • Hardcourts
  • Sports Oval

This is great news for our community and students and means that we will be able to provide high quality learning experiences in high quality facilities. Make sure you check out our social media pages for updates and photos!

YEAR 7 2025

We continue to have high demand for student placement for Year 7 in 2025 and again, by far the number of placement requests have exceeded those received for this year’s cohort. As a result of a high demand for enrolments, the College remains under an Enrolment Management Plan which restricts enrolment to those who live within the enrolment zone.

Welcome to families who are joining us in 2025! By now you will have received a welcome letter to confirm your details with us and in the coming weeks will receive an enrolment pack. We are looking forward to you joining us at Greenvale Secondary College.

STUDENT ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL DATA

The College recently received our 2024 results for the Attitude to School Survey that all students are asked to complete. We use this data to inform our planning and track our progress but it is equally important to share this with our community.

The data received is one piece of evidence of the impact we are having on our students and their learning experience and tells us that:

  • 80% of students report effective behaviours in the classroom (compared to 55% across the state)
  • 70% of students report a high level of differentiated learning (compared to 57% across the state)
  • 65% of students report a high sense of confidence in their learning (compared to 56% across the state)

END OF TERM 3 ASSEMBLY

In the final weeks of Term 3, there was College Assembly that focused on acknowledging R U OK? Day as well as speaking to our school values and the focus of Teamwork in Term 4.

Our assemblies are always a positive opportunity to acknowledge achievements of our students in all year levels as well as an opportunity to listen to a fantastic music performance from some of our talented year 7 students.

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMTATICS COMPETITION

First run in 1978, the Australian Mathematics Competition is Australia’s longest running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. The competition contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend students’ problem-solving skills.

This year we would like to congratulate some of our students and their results including:

The final weeks of Term 3 have been busy and enriching for Year 7, 8 and 9 GSC students, who have been engaged with academic and extracurricular pursuits. Students across year levels have been preparing for and undertaking their Common Assessment Tasks for Unit 3, showing their learning and growth across the term. For Year 9s in particular, there has been an emphasis on revision and note-taking as they continue to prepare for their move towards senior studies next year.

Similarly, teaching staff have been continuing to prepare learning for the senior years at Greenvale Secondary College. Staff are preparing Year 10 units and assessments, planning the use of new learning spaces, and also getting ready to delivers GSC’s first VCE studies in 2025.

As well as our learning programs, it has been an exciting end to term outside of the classroom. The final two weeks of term have excursions for all year levels including Year 9 Camp at Kinglake Forest Adventures Camp, Year 7 and 8 Surfing trip to Ocean Grove and the Year 8 IMAX and Museum visit. Activities on site include Year 9 Italian Cooking Class, the Connect Small Business Expo hosted by Year 9s for Year 8 students, and the school wide R U OK Day. Students across year levels (as well as staff) have been particularly excited for the Cultural Infusion Day in Week 10, an opportunity to share and celebrate a range of aspects of their own and their peers’ cultures, including food, language, dress, dance and music.

SUBJECT SELECTION AND RESOURCE LISTS

The College acknowledges all parents and guardians who have supported their children through the pressure of putting in their subject preferences for Years 9 and 10 2025. While this process does take some careful time and thought (from the Subject Expo through to signing off on final choices), this is because it is so important for students to have a voice in defining their future pathways in secondary education.

We are currently working through the final steps of processing requests and creating class lists. In early Term 4, current Year 8 and 9 students will receive their allocation of subjects for 2025. At this time all students will receive Resource Lists to guide families to purchase textbooks, stationary and other essential items for the year ahead.

RECOGNITION OF ACHIEVEMENT IN NAPLAN

Several of our Year 9 students were celebrated in Week 9 at our Whole School Assembly for achieving excellence in NAPLAN. The following students were recognised for Exceeding the standard in the areas listed:

HAVING A HOLIDAY BREAK

School holidays are a time for secondary students to take a break after a long term of engagement in the rigours of class work, assessments and study. This downtime helps prevent burnout in hardworking students, and gives everyone in the family a mental break from the pressures of school-centred organisation.

This is an important chance for students to refresh and recharge. It is healthy for students to continue to keep to a consistent sleep schedule (going to bed and waking up), to stay active, to take opportunities to be both social and have quiet time, and to generally spend time on the activities (and with the people) they love. We look forward to seeing students with renewed energy and enthusiasm at the beginning of Term 4, ready to begin the final units of learning for 2024.

YEAR 9 – Copy

Read Time: ( words)

The start to Semester 2 of Year 9 has been an eventful one! Students tackled new electives to develop new transferable skills which will contribute to their future pathways and workplaces.

In Connect, a group of students completed the Life Skills Program where they learned about cars, how to change a type, how much cars cost to run and to service, a First Aid session and ways to cope with challenging situations. Students reflected on what they had learned and how they could apply it to their daily life and to potential workplaces. Thank you to Lucinda Vrzovski, Luisa De amici and Laura Franzo for support our external facilitators to run this!

Last week, about half the cohort went on Camp to Kinglake, exploring the surrounding forest, challenging their fears of heights and enjoying the experience. A huge thank you to Angela Alessandri, James Tonna, Lucinda Vrzovski, Maxim Sheko and Liz Uyanik for supporting our students to build their resilience and create unforgettable memories.

On Wednesday this week, we will have the first ever Greenvale Small Business Expo where our Year 9 students will present their proposal, with marketing materials, financial projections, benefits of implementing their ideas and how their business will support and build a more cohesive community. Year 8s will visit in Period 5 and we look forward to seeing parents come through for an hour after school.

Finally, congratulations to our Year 9 students who are consistently demonstrating our school values of Respect, Leadership, Excellence and Teamwork. The Top 20 students have been invited to a Pizza Party tomorrow during second break to celebrate their achievements and recognize their continuing positive contribution to our school community.

Please read below first hand accounts of Camp and Business project from our students to better understand their experiences!

Leyla Saylik 9C:

This year our connection is focusing on giving back to the community, specifically sharing ideas, creations helping a specific group or everyone in general be and give back the best they can to our people. My group is focusing on elderly people as we could choose any group. Our focus is to create this big service for these people as they can experience mental health issues helping them would warm our hearts making sure they are ok another service we thought about was baking them desserts bringing smile on their faces we would do this at an elderly center giving them the best opportunities.

Keola Kang 9D:

Last week, the Year 9’s got to experience Kinglake Camp. We had the chance to overcome fears, bond with friends, and connect with the environment. Our camp consisted of tree activities like Free Falling and Leap of Faith, where we learned to let go of what our mind tells our body and be more courageous and trusting in the people around you. On the second night, all the groups got to go on a night walk out to a pine forest, later we huddled around a campfire with our sticks, roasting marshmallows and listening to each other’s music taste. The last day of camp was really emotional, everyone was really sad that we had to leave. The memories from camp will always be cherished, Kinglake Camp was an amazing camp.

Janah Abdulwahab:

In Life Skills I really enjoyed learning about mental health and some of the other things we did including First Aid and car maintenance. In first Aid we learned how to do CPR and how to do a defibrillator. In Mental Health we learned about building up resilience and how to help someone when they are struggling with their mental health. In car maintenance we learned how to fix a tyre and what to do in emergencies.

I also went on camp and what I really loved and enjoyed was how it made me come out of my comfort zone and what I took about of it was that I can do anything as long as I put my mind to it! I also loved how everyone worked as a team.

YEAR 7 AND 8

Read Time: ( words)

Welcome to the end of another busy and productive term in the Junior School and yet in the last couple of weeks there is still lots to do. All the year 8 students will be visiting the Melbourne Museum and IMAX which links to their Humanities. This will be a great experience, and we look forward to sharing photos and stories in the next newsletter.

This term saw the launch of Student of the Month in the Junior School. This was an opportunity for all staff to nominate a student who constantly displays all the school values but also gives 100% in all they do. The awards were presented at our year level assemblies and the July Students of the Month were:

Photos of both sets of award recipients and musical performances for both assemblies have been included in this report.

This month also wrapped up the year 8 students who were required to select their electives for year 9. The year 8 students undertook this process really well and put a lot of thought into what they wanted to do next year in preparation for their senior years at Greenvale Secondary College. The subject allocation for 2025 should be available early term 4 if not this term.

We are looking forward to a productive term 4 and that our students have a good break and return on October 7 ready for their last term in year 7 or 8. If your footy team is playing in the finals, hopefully they win unless they play Geelong at any stage.

COLLEGE SPORT

Read Time: ( words)

As always, the School Sports Victoria calendar has come to an end in term 3. What a fantastic year it has been for sports at Greenvale Secondary College! We are incredibly proud of all our students who participated in the 2024 division sports. Your dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship have made this year truly memorable. Whether you competed on the field, court, or track, your commitment to representing our college with pride is something we greatly appreciate.

A huge congratulations to all the students who advanced to the Northern Metro Region Finals. Your hard work and determination have taken you to new heights, and we are thrilled to see Greenvale Secondary College so well-represented at this level. You have made us proud by showcasing the skills and values we hold dear at our college.

A special shout out goes to Noah Tarallo, who has achieved the remarkable feat of qualifying for the Nationals in cross country. This is an extraordinary accomplishment, and we are excited to see Noah compete on the national stage. We wish you all the best, Noah, as you continue to push your limits and represent Greenvale at the highest level.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the unwavering support of our parents and staff. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the parents who have cheered from the sidelines, helped with transport, and supported their children throughout the year. To our dedicated staff, especially those who have coached and guided our teams, your hard work and passion for sport are truly appreciated.

Thank you all for making 2024 a successful and inspiring year for Greenvale Secondary College sports. We look forward to more victories, personal bests, and memorable moments in the future. Go Greenvale!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Read Time: ( words)

The music department has been very busy over the past few weeks with many different performances taking place. On Monday 26 August at our year level assemblies, we had the opportunity to showcase some of our vocal students and one of our guitarists. They all did an outstanding job performing to their peers.

Earlier in the year we introduced another performance opportunity to help build our musicians confidence by performing in a smaller setting to a small audience. With these performances, the students who perform invite a couple of friends each creating a welcoming and encouraging environment for them. On Friday 30 August we held two of these performances during recess and lunch in the music portable. We had flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin, keyboard and vocal solos and duets. It was fantastic to see the students gain performance experience without the pressure of a large audience.

On Monday 2 September we had two more performances in the library over both breaks. On display we had solos and duets from the following instruments; violin, drums, bass guitar, French Horn and keyboard. The second performance ended with our school ensemble performing a piece called A Little Bit of Swing. Both performances attracted a huge audience which was great to see.

At Greenvale College we offer a wide range of instruments for students to learn (including voice) and accept new students all throughout the year. Students can even hire their chosen instrument from the school (subject to availability). If this is something you are interested in please collect an enrolment form from the office or from one of our music teachers. Students who learn an instrument outside of school are welcome to join our school ensemble which is held 3:10pm – 4:00pm each Wednesday. Please see Mrs. McPhail for more details.

HOUSE UPDATE

Read Time: ( words)

The SRC’s previously planned free dress day is now scheduled to take place on the 22nd of November, on the day that the school will observe White Ribbon Day. Students will have the opportunity to wear casual clothes and bring in a gold coin donation that will go towards the prevention of violence against women.

This term students have worked collaboratively in their mentor groups to have their say on important topics such as, subject selection, the PE uniform, activity days, culture day, and awards night. This has assisted the SRC in planning for events and ensuring that the voice of the student body is captured and heard by the school’s leadership team.

The SRC also workshopped with Mr. Natoli this term on some of the most important student concerns and feedback. The session gave the students time to reflect on the year so far and to generate ideas to continue to foster student engagement throughout the rest of the year.

When your child needs to be picked up early from school, please either contact the Office on 8393 0000 or send your child with a note to bring into Office Administration letting us know the time you will be picking up your child. This will ensure the class teacher will be notified when your child needs to leave class.

When picking up your child early, you are required to come into the Administration Office and sign your child out through the Compass Kiosk.

We request you pick your child up at the change over time between periods and do not pick your child up early after 2:45pm to minimise disruption to classes.

ATTENDANCE – IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY!

Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

We realise some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But we also know that when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.

It is important that you contact the school as soon as possible on 8393 0000 or log onto the Compass Portal to inform us of your child’s absence.

We also ask parents/guardians/carers to regularly monitor their child’s attendance through the Compass Parent Portal.
