CONNECT – JUNE JULY 2025

PRINCIPALS REPORT

At the end of a very busy Term 2 I would like to thank all the students and staff for their contributions throughout the Term. In particular, we have been working hard to progress our work on celebrating and acknowledging diversity and inclusion within our school and community.

At Greenvale Secondary College we value the diversity of gender, sexuality, culture, ethnicity, and faith of all our students. We are proud of our diversity, and everyone is welcome at our school. This work is one of the key focus areas of our current Strategic Plan and an area we are beginning to work more on in 2025.

Celebrating the diversity of our community makes us stronger, kinder and more innovative. We are committed to making sure that students – regardless of their gender, sexuality or background feel accepted, supported and able to learn.

Currently, we teach all students according to our school values and teach the respectful relationships framework. This includes education around diversity and inclusion.

To achieve our values and aims, everyone at Greenvale Secondary College plays an important role. This semester, we have reminded students of our values and the importance of using these in everything we do.

To help us make our school a place where everyone feels welcome, respected and supported, we encourage parents and families to also speak to your child about these values, as well as the importance of:

  • understanding that we celebrate diversity and inclusion which includes culture, sexuality and gender
  • understanding the importance of everyone at school being treated with respect.

For more information, please see Racism: talking with children and teens, Raising Children Network

RESTORATIVE PRACTICE PILOT

As we continue the implementation of our Positive Learning Framework, the College has partnered with Jesuit Social Services and the Department of Justice and Community Safety in a program that over the next 3 years will train our staff in Restorative Practices. This researched approach is proven to reduce repeat offences that can often lead to young people being in the Youth Justice System.

The work is a set of strategies that focus on repairing harm and building relationships after an incident, rather than solely focusing on punishment. They aim to foster a sense of responsibility, accountability and reconciliation among individuals involved.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR SCHOOLS AND RUBRICS

The work our staff and students do is now being noticed well beyond the school gate! The College recently hosted teams from 8 of the local secondary schools to deliver professional learning in the use of developmental rubrics and assessment practices to promote learning growth. It is great that our school and staff are being recognised for their work in this space and as per our vision for the school – we are staying at the forefront of education. Our community can be proud of this work!

PRIMARY SCHOOL TRANSITION

It is that time of year where we have been working with our local primary schools to manage the 2026 intake of year 7. Like previous years, the College has received significantly more enrolment requests than we can offer placement to. We look forward to welcoming our new families across the remainder of this year.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTS

Semester Reports for all students will be published in the final week of Term 2 on Compass. Parents will receive a notification when your child’s reports are ready to be viewed. All parents/guardians are encouraged to contact their child’s relevant Mentor Teacher with any follow up questions or concerns.

Please take the time to discuss this report with your child and celebrate their learning. We are proud of their achievements and hope you are too!

STAFF AND STUDENT ILLNESS

Like many workplaces and schools, we have recently experienced higher than normal absences due to illness and COVID19. The College will continue to support all members of our community during this period and appreciate the support and understanding our families have as we work to ensure that learning is not interrupted.

UPDATE ON SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION PROCEDURES

Our school is committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all students and staff. You may be aware of recent changes announced to suspension and expulsion powers that will be available to Victorian principals from day one of Term 3, (Monday 21 July 2025).

We know that students’ behaviour outside of school, particularly online, can sometimes impact the safety of students and staff at school.

In exceptional circumstances, principals of Victorian government schools will be able suspend or expel students for behaviour that occurs outside of school grounds and/or hours including online, if it poses a significant danger to the safety and wellbeing of students or staff.

These powers apply only to serious incidents where there is a clear and close connection to the school and the behaviour of a student outside of school unreasonably impacts the safety and wellbeing of students or staff at school, and their ability to learn or work. Please note:

  • They do not apply to behaviours unrelated to the school or school community.
  • They only apply to behaviour which occurs from Monday 21 July 2025 onwards.

Suspension and expulsion will remain measures of last resort – our primary approach continues to focus on proactive and positive behaviour support, including working with you to teach students the behaviours we expect of them, in school and in life.

Thank you for your continued support as we work in partnership to educate and support our young people.

SUPPORT USING COMPASS

Thank you to all of our families for their connection and engagement with learning at Greenvale Secondary College. In our continued efforts I wanted to raise awareness of the assistance available to access and navigate Compass.

It is important that all families are regularly logging in, reading notifications and celebrating the learning growth of their child. Sometimes we recognise that navigating or accessing technology may require a little support, so recommend that families:

  1. Drop into the Administration Office and ask for assistance
  2. Check out the online Parent and Family Guide for Compass
  3. Login to Compass or our Website and view the help guides under School Documentation

Positive Learning Framework

An important element of our mission at Greenvale Secondary College is fostering the development of the whole student, and equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed as lifelong learners and engaged citizens.

In doing this, we have developed our Positive Learning Framework which includes building resilience, optimism, mindfulness, and strengths-based approaches in our teaching and learning. Teaching values and expected behaviours is key to developing socially responsible individuals.

Our teaching encompasses:

  • Modelling: Teachers and staff demonstrate respectful, ethical behaviour.
  • Explicit Instruction: Direct lessons on values and social-emotional learning.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Acknowledging and rewarding positive behaviours.
  • Restorative Practices: Addressing conflict through dialogue and accountability.

The Corporal Cameron Baird Award:

We are delighted that Bianca Barbaro, a year 7 student, applied for and was one of four students in our region who won, the Corporal Cameron Baird Memorial Award. The award is named after Corporal Cameron Baird, an Australian soldier who passed away 2013 whilst protecting our country. He received the Victoria Cross for his bravery and leadership.

The award recognises young people who show courage, resilience and a strong commitment to helping others.

Bianca is a worthy recipient and we so very proud of  her which is evident in her reflection after the announcement:

“It reminded me how important it is to stand up for what is right, support your community and lead with kindness. This award means a lot to me, and I am really grateful for the opportunity. I can’t wait to keep growing and finding more ways to make a difference.”

Congratulations Bianca and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for you.

Semester One Reports

End-of-semester reports are a vital part of the academic process, providing a comprehensive overview of student progress and performance. At Greenvale Secondary College we are focussed on a strength-based approach, growth and achieving ones best.

For parents and students, the report is an opportunity to reflect on where the student is on the learning continuum, effort, growth, and consistency throughout the semester. Teachers use these reports not only to assess individual learning outcomes but also to guide future instruction. Please take the time to discuss the report with your child and reach out to teachers if you have questions.

Reminders:

  • Blazers are to be worn to and from school every day in Term 2 and 3.
  • Being Ready to Learn means students are on time each day and have their charged laptop, folder and books, pencil case, planner and a positive attitude.
  • Students who do not demonstrate consistently good behaviour will not be able to participate in excursions or End of Year Activities.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Read Time: ( words)

Dear Middle School Community,

As Term 2 comes to a close, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the many significant milestones achieved by our Year 9 and 10 students over the past few months. From exams and work placements to subject selection and future planning, our students have taken important steps on their educational journeys.

Year 10 Exams:

Term 2 was a particularly important one for our Year 10 cohort, who undertook their mid-year exams. These assessments not only tested their academic progress but also gave them valuable experience in preparing for the structure and expectations of senior secondary schooling.

Year 10 Work Experience:

A major highlight of the term was Work Experience Week. Our Year 10 students stepped out of the classroom and into a variety of workplaces, getting a taste of the world beyond school. From offices and retail to health care and trades, students gained insight into potential career paths and developed practical skills such as communication, time management, and workplace responsibility. We’ve heard some fantastic feedback from employers and students alike, and it’s clear this experience has sparked fresh ideas about the future.

Year 9 Looking Ahead:

While Year 10 students were diving into exams and careers, our Year 9 students began an important phase of their own: thinking about subject selection for Year 10. Over the course of the term, students have been encouraged to reflect on their interests, strengths, and goals as they start to plan their pathways for the year ahead.

Information sessions, class discussions, and support from staff have helped students and families start these important conversations. It’s an exciting time, and we encourage parents to continue talking with their children about subject choices and how they connect to future aspirations.

As we head into Term 3, there’s plenty more to come. For Year 10, subject selection for Year 11 and further career planning will be key themes. Year 9 students will continue to build their understanding of what’s possible and start making decisions that will shape their senior years.

We’re incredibly proud of the maturity and motivation shown by both year levels throughout Term 2. Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support—your involvement makes a big difference in helping students navigate these important stages.

We look forward to an engaging and rewarding Term 3!

Regards,

Middle School Team

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Read Time: ( words)

As Term 2 draws to a close, the Junior School at Greenvale Secondary College has had plenty to celebrate!

Recognising Our Rising Stars

This week’s Junior School Assembly was a vibrant celebration of student achievement, with a special focus on those who received the most positive recognitions throughout the term. These students were acknowledged for consistently demonstrating our school values—Respect, Responsibility, and Excellence—both in and out of the classroom. Their dedication to learning, positive attitude, and contribution to the school community set a wonderful example for their peers.

Year 9 Subject Selection Expo

Another major highlight was the Year 9 Subject Selection Expo, which gave Year 8 students and families a chance to explore the exciting elective options on offer for 2025. The expo showcased a diverse range of subjects, including Art, Music, Sport Science, Like a Boss (Business & Enterprise), and Forensic Science. With engaging displays, interactive presentations, and the chance to speak with passionate teachers and current students, it was an informative and inspiring evening. Students are now better equipped to make informed choices about their learning pathways for next year.

Term 2 Success

We also want to congratulate all students on the successful completion of Term 2. Despite the challenges and busy schedules, our students demonstrated resilience and commitment in completing their assessment tasks to the best of their ability. Staff are proud of the growth in both academic and personal development shown across the term.

As we look ahead to Term 3, we encourage all students to reflect on their successes, set new goals, and return ready to continue striving for excellence.

Have a safe and restful break!

STUDENT SERVICES

Read Time: ( words)

Student Services – June

As the cold is upon us, we spend more time indoors with the heater on, playing games, reading, and chatting to loved ones.

Indoor groups have been run through the term including 1000 Generations Strength and Shine, Social Stencil and the friendship group. These programs give students the opportunity to flourish in the presence of their peers while utilising peer support.

Cultural Immersion Day

Greenvale Secondary College has placed this day of extended celebration in our yearly calendar for years to come.

GSC emphases the need for respect, harmony, and collaboration within the school community. Human rights recognise the inherent value of each person, regardless of our background, where we live, what we look like, what we think, or what we believe in. We know that racism prevents people from enjoying dignity and equality, which are core principles of human rights.

Visit from the Australian Federal Police

Leading Senior Constable De Bono attended GSC to support the messages to students in relation to cybersafety and the requirements of the law.

For further information in relation to safety online, please visit the E- Safety Commissioner website:  https://www.esafety.gov.au/

Careers & Year 10 Work Experience

Numerous expos have been attended by students over the last term allowing students to ask questions, seek clarification and broaden their knowledge of possible career paths. Please see Careers page for more detailed information

Students of year 10 are currently participating in 2 weeks of work experience. This time allows for students to dig deeper into the understanding of the requirements of employment, assess their goals in relation to career path and develop skills to allow them to apply for casual employment.

Gold Award and Silver Award Activities

Numerous students were acknowledged this semester for their effort, dedication and showcasing of  Greenvale Secondary College’s values.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Read Time: ( words)

It has been pleasing to see all students in Music classes, instrumental lessons and ensembles continuing to progress in their music making over the second half of Term 2.

The school ensemble has continued to work very hard at rehearsals each week. On Friday the 13th of June, there were two informal lunch-time concerts which took place in the Drama room across both breaks. The ensemble performed ‘Get Smart’ and their own rendition of ‘Viva La Vida’. There were also many soloists and small groups that performed, including drums, keyboard, electric guitar, bass guitar, French horn, trumpet and singers. There was an excellent turn out, with a large audience of students and teachers crowding outside on the grass and cheering for the performers. Congratulations to everyone who performed!

In Year 7 Music classes, students continued to develop their skills on the keyboard and learnt to how to play at least one song in preparation for their CAT. For the first part of the CAT, students listened to the energetic and upbeat ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire. Using a listening table, they responded to and described how four different elements of music were featured and manipulated throughout the song. Students who wanted to extend themselves further explained how the treatment of each element enhanced the mood and expression of the song. The second part of the CAT involved students performing their keyboard song, either as a solo or as part of a small group of three or four students. It was great to see the teamwork and ensemble skills of those students who chose to perform in a group. Some students who were more advanced chose to perform more challenging pieces not on the list, which usually involved using both hands and playing chords – it was impressive to see these students challenge themselves!

For students who had never played the keyboard before, it was pleasing to see their dedication and perseverance in putting together a piece for performance for the first time.

In the Year 9 Music elective, students have been finishing off and refining their music composed for a film or gaming scene that they wrote in preparation for their CAT. For the first part of the CAT, students listened to the mesmerising theme from the game ‘Halo’. Using a listening table, they responded to and described how four elements of music were featured and combined within the song to express the imagery and actions of the game. The second part of the CAT involved students presenting their composition and demonstrating their planning by showing a written narrative of their gaming scene(s) and a written justification for how they manipulated the elements of music and chose specific instruments sounds or sound effects to portray the mood and actions of their scene narrative. Many students chose to work in pairs which opened greater possibilities for creativity. It was impressive to see how inventive and original each student and pair was in creating their own music to tell a vivid story!

One pair of students composed their music using the keyboard and regularly changed the instrument sound and the pitch register to represent different characters and villains in their scene and the changes of mood.

Another student composed his music on the electric guitar and used special effects and techniques such as reverb, the whammy bar (which bends the pitch), glissando (sliding across multiple frets) and intentionally dissonant chords to evoke an eerie mood based on his scene set in a haunted house.

HOUSE AND SRC UPDATE

SRC / House Term 2 Update 2025

Term 2 for the SRC has been busy yet productive. On 28 April, the SRC led Greenvale Secondary College’s WholeSchool Assembly commemorating Anzac Day. Theatre & Performing Arts Representative, Defne Ozcelik, did a fantastic job as student MC. Year 8 Leader, Zayed El Akoumi, delivered a heartfelt reading of the Ode of Remembrance poem, while Year 7 Leader, Kuzey Sinsi, shared reflections from the Junior School Camp, highlighting memorable moments and activities enjoyed by students.

The SRC also welcomed local MP Iwan Walters to a meeting to discuss plans for a Recycling Initiative Project and the college’s new partnership with CDS Victoria. Greenvale Secondary College is now an official donation partner with CDS Victoria, and the SRC is leading the way. Concerned by increasing rubbish around the school grounds, the team is launching a recycling initiative focused on collecting 10-cent recyclable materials. Funds raised will go toward enhancing both indoor and outdoor learning environments. Two SRC captains are currently conducting an environmental audit to determine optimal bin placement, with the next steps involving team creation and school-wide promotion.

In addition, the SRC has begun working with Kirsten Smith from ACHPER Victoria to lead the Active Schools initiative at Greenvale Secondary College. Kirsten has facilitated two SRC meetings and is supporting the team in designing programs and activities that motivate all students to be active for life, using grant funding to expand resources and opportunities for physical activity.

Looking ahead, the SRC is excited to launch these projects in Term 3 and beyond. The team continues to show strong leadership and dedication, and we can’t wait to see the positive impact their efforts will have across the school community. Stay tuned for more exciting updates!

CURRICULUM/TEACHING AND LEARNING

Mid-Year Reflections and What’s Next: Reports, Goals, and Subject Selection

As we reach the midpoint of the school year, students and families will receive Semester 1 reports—a valuable opportunity to reflect on progress and set purposeful goals for the term ahead. The semester change also brings new subjects and rotations, offering a fresh start and the chance to re-engage with learning.

For students in Years 8 and 9, this is an exciting time as they begin to consider the subjects they will elect to study in 2026. Subject selection is a key moment of student voice and choice. Year 9 marks the first opportunity to personalise the learning journey, while Year 10 students get to select all their subjects, other than Maths and English and many choosing to challenge themselves with VCE subjects.

The subject selection process is already underway, with students attending the Subject Selection Expo in Week 11. This event provides the first tools to help them explore their interests, understand course options, and begin important conversations with families and teachers. The process is collaborative and thoughtful and relies on the students’ work in Connect in investigating different careers. This is to ensure each student is supported to make informed choices aligned with their passions and goals.

As we look ahead to Term 3, students are encouraged to set clear, achievable goals and take full advantage of the opportunities the second half of the year offers. This is a valuable time for reflection, renewal, and forward planning. Whether it’s preparing for end-of-year assessments, exploring subject selections for the following year, or simply building on the progress made in Semester 1, Term 3 presents a chance to reset and refocus.

Students in all year levels are encouraged to take ownership of their learning by identifying specific areas for growth and setting realistic targets. This might include improving time management, deepening their understanding of subject content, seeking feedback more regularly, or developing stronger study habits. For Year 10 students, especially, this term is a critical window for consolidating knowledge, revising effectively, and seeking additional support if needed.

Equally important is taking time to celebrate the progress already made. Growth is not only measured by grades, but also by increased confidence, engagement, and resilience. By approaching Term 3 with a growth mindset, students can continue to build momentum and lay the groundwork for a strong finish to the academic year.

We encourage families to support this process by having conversations about goals at home, checking in regularly, and reinforcing the importance of balance, well-being, and persistence.

COLLEGE SPORT

Success for Interschool Sport at Greenvale Secondary College

We are thrilled to share the exciting achievements of our interschool sports teams so far this year. For the first time in Greenvale Secondary College’s history, a female team has progressed to the next round of competition—a milestone moment for our school community. Congratulations to the Year 8 Netball and Junior Girls AFL teams for making history and showcasing incredible skill, teamwork and determination.

Adding to this outstanding success, our Year 7 Boys Football Team has also advanced to the next round, further cementing what is already our most successful interschool sports year to date—and it’s only Term 2!

These achievements reflect the growing strength of our sports program and the passion of our students and staff. A key part of this success has been the incredible leadership shown by our Year 9 cohort, who have stepped into roles such as coaches, runners, and water carriers. Their efforts have helped guide and motivate our younger teams both on and off the field.

Beyond game days, these leaders have also contributed to our Sports Enhancement Program, assisting staff with running drills, setting up games, and helping students develop their skills, confidence, and teamwork.

Below, you’ll see two examples of this leadership in action. In the first photo, Aiden Merrifield (Year 9) giving the Year 7 Boys a motivating pre-game speech, while his coaching partner Oliver Tuohey (Year 9) listens in support. In the second image, our Junior Girls AFL Team poses proudly after their game with one of their coaches, Jacob Quinlan (Year 9).

CAREERS

Year 10s Work Experience Program

The Year 10 students have commenced the very first GSC Year 10 Work experience program from Mon 23 June and will complete by the end of Term 2.  All the best to students on placements, with so much happening this term, we hope these experiences will allow students to gain some good insights and skills.  Students record their insights in their Work Placement journals, and feedback is collected from themselves, visiting teachers, employers and parents; followed by debrief sessions after their work experience placement.

VET Discovery Expo 2025

Year 9 students had the opportunity to attend the VET Discovery Expo 2025 on Thursday 29 May.  The expo showcased a variety of industries and training opportunities, offering students practical insights into their future careers, pathways and to help make informed decisions about career options. There was a focus on interactive and engaging activities, where students had the opportunity to experience different VET pathways first-hand.

Trade & Tech Fit Career Expo 2025

Hosted by the Department of Education, on Tues 3 June, Year 9s & 10s females were offered the opportunity for the Trade & Tech Fit career expo which showcased study and employment opportunities for female and gender diverse young people in years 7 to 12 in industries that are traditionally pitched to males.  There were hands-on activities that allowed students to design video games, lay bricks, weld, use a flight simulator, program a robot, safety test equipment, use power tools, learn to paint and more. It provides a safe and equitable space where students engage with female tradies, apprentices and industry professionals, providing insight into the breadth of career pathways where female and gender diverse people are underrepresented.

Upcoming Careers Activities

Morrisby Profiling and Interview

Year 9 students in August will be participating in an online survey that will profile them with potential career paths, where later in the year they will be attending an interview with a Morrisby Careers Practitioner to unpack results of their profile survey.

Morrisby is a career profiling tool used in schools to help students explore their interests, aptitudes, and potential career paths. It uses a combination of psychometric assessments and questionnaires to create a personalized profile that suggests suitable career paths, educational options, and skills development areas. The platform also incorporates tools for students to research careers, courses, and add their own ideas where they will be developing their Career Action Plan. This builds a longitudinal career development approach with developing goals and plans, as this will be the basis of preparing for the year 10 Work Experience Program, subject selections, work placements and career decision making.

Unfortunately, we know that students sometimes fall ill or hurt themselves while at school – accidents happen! The College has first aid trained staff and a well-equipped first aid room.

The Office will notify parents or emergency contacts if there is a serious injury. You may be asked to collect your student if we cannot care for them at school. The Office may also contact you to seek your advice about how you’d like us to manage your child.

Please remember to update the College with any important medical information so we can be aware and support. Any medication provided to the College must come with a doctor’s certificate about its use and a completed medication authority form.

Please discourage your child from contacting you via mobile phone – if they are unwell, they can come to the Office at any time and we will contact you as needed.

CANTEEN ORDERS

Families can order their child’s lunch through Compass each day, before 9:30am.  Students are to go to the canteen to collect their orders at the start of Break 1 or Break 2.

If you miss the cut off for lunch orders, you are welcome to bring lunch or money to the Administration Office so your student doesn’t miss out. Please note, there are no IOUs available through the Canteen.

ATTENDANCE – IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY!

Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

We realise some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But we also know that when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.

It is important that you contact the school as soon as possible on 8393 0000 or log onto the Compass Portal to inform us of your child’s absence.

We also ask parents/guardians/carers to regularly monitor their child’s attendance through the Compass Parent Portal.
